You've been by the jewelry store a dozen times. It's that engagement ring. You saw it and now you can't get it off your mind. You have the money, but how can you confront him with the idea of upgrading your engagement ring? He must have spent so much time, poring over stone after stone to pick the right one...how can you disappoint him by saying you want something bigger, more modern, or simply more your style?
Well, you can start by pushing your fears aside. The vast majority of men probably couldn't pick your ring out of a line-up. Chances are good that he chose the ring recommended by the jeweler. Hey, he probably tried, but at some point it's easier to defer to the expert. Secondly, he loves you and he wants you to be happy. Your engagement ring is a sticker of your love. Don't you deserve one that won't leave you feeling guilty for stealing covert glances at every jewelry-store window you walk by?
If money is not an issue, there's in effect no presume not to have the ring you want. And if the diamond or the setting has sentimental value (a family heirloom, perhaps), it's no sweat to turn out one or the other. You can get a diamond of better cut, clarity, or color in your current setting and turn your previous stone into other ring or a necklace. Or you can put your current rock in a newer or more stylish setting and put a colored stone in your old setting. If you're not curious in breaking up the set, or if you're seeing for a larger diamond, you can always move your current ring to the other hand (resizing is a cinch).
If you're still feeling bad about upgrading your engagement ring, just keep one last thing in mind: you can never have too much heirloom jewelry. If, like most people, you have more than one child (or even nieces or nephews), when it comes time to pass on something for their special day, you'll be glad to have a diamond for each of them (not to mention a spare for yourself).
