Styling Hair Extensions

Wearers of hair extensions need to rehearsal extra care when having them shaped or styled. Depending upon either they are real human hair or synthetic, different types of cutting and styling tools may be required. The most foremost item to own is a loop brush or a boar bristle brush either of which will be gentler on the hair and less likely to catch the bonds and pull the extensions out.

Purchase the hair extensions in the color you want and if necessary, dye your own hair to match them. They have already been treated and using added coloring or perming products is likely to shorten the lifespan as well as possibly creating an unwearable color.

Different stylists prefer the use of different tools when cutting extensions with some using a razor and others scissors. Having them cut into layers will generate the most natural look as well as manufacture curls more buoyant and allow them to fall naturally. The layers do not have to be extreme and may be just slightly tapered. Leave the hair slightly longer the first time to allow for trims after the next time they are "tightened". This is when the hair extensions are removed and reattached and may result in slightly different placement. Normal wear and tear may also make it needful to have a trim, so allow extra for this as well. Unlike natural hair these do not grow, and so when purchasing high quality and costly extensions for their length, having to have them substituted because of poor planning can become expensive.

The use of styling tools such as blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons should be kept to a minimum. Anything that causes damage to the wearer's natural hair will also cause damage and possibly more so to extensions. Use an adjustable iron on medium combined with a heat protective styling spray. Avoid the use of flat irons or curling irons near where the hair extensions are attached to the head so as to not weaken the bond.

The use of a loop or bristle boar brush will help stop ripping the bonds as well as damaging the hair itself. A minimal amount of teasing may be done however it requires care when brushing out. Always begin at the ends of the hair and work towards the head, moderately removing snarls and tangles. Wearing hair extensions in a pony tail and using a satin pillow while sleeping will help keep tangles from forming while sleeping.

Hair extensions are ready in a range of attachment styles. Choosing which work best for the style and length of time they will be worn are one notice when purchasing. Clip in, wefts, ring attachment and bonded are some of the most popular styles available. The cost of the hair extensions plus may be the only cost involved for a wearer who is attaching their own. For others a salon visit may be required either for attaching or to have them styled.
